caution: writers at play

Ty Bluesmith

who's gonna play the opry and the wabash cannonball?

he drove downtown
they went downtown
the entire world was downtown and

he entered a private lot and a sign instructed him not to park in the lot but he was gonna anyway ok becuz

the girl needed to go into the bldg attached to the lot and
the lot was framed by red bricks and the bldg was red brick and

he backed his shit into the parking space and the baby was asleep in his seat and the two-yr-old was snoozing in hers and the girl

melinda maria dejesus bonaventura cruz said sweet boy i'll be right back ok and he said sure see ya in a bit and she climbed out and

he watched her walk across the parking lot to the title office
her curls and her freckles and long legs and heels and big black shades

no not cheap sunglasses the girl is the factory owner's daughter ok

and umm he got out
he hadn't shaved
he never shaves hardly and

he leaned against the side of the hood of his crossover that his parents hate like for example his old man said how much do you pay a month for that thing it has skinny little tires and the son said $320 a month and the dad said you coulda had a Lincoln SUV for $450 and the son was like [in his head] i barely have the $320 but he didn't say that shit at the time becuz it was a holiday and everyone was gathered and listening and if he said anything about money they would all roll their eyes and say he doesn't try hard enough or whatever

and

he took out his smokes and lamented his inability to quit and fired up a menthol and filled his lungs with the sweet murdering poison

[dopamine receptors]

and

he was thinking about the girl inside the title bureau signing off on the house she owned with her ex-husband and he knew that somewhere there was someone with a broken heart over that shit and he thought to himself -

they come and go don't they

but at the same time he knew [or at least hoped] that the words would always keep him in the game thank god i can do one thing right he told himself and the cigarette was so nice so fucking nice dude and

he heard like a commotion and looked out at the sidewalk and a fire station was in the background and the ladder truck was gleaming in the morning light and two crackheads - one white one black- were arguing and pushing one another around near the edge of the curb and the one way traffic was fierce right there and our hero hit his smoke again and was like [all up in his head] those motherfuckers are going to get hit yo

and like there was a fat hillbilly homeless woman with the men and she was screaming something in homeless english

and

she didn't have any teeth ok

and the taller guy [black] was having an easy time with the shorter fella [white] and was walking him backwards chest-to-chest and

all of a sudden
out of nowhere

two cops rolled up and one of them dude i swear she couldn't have been more than 5 foot nuthin and a hundred pounds said LEON WTF DID I TELL YOU???

and b4 he could answer umm she socked LEON WTF DID I TELL YOU on his chin

and now here's the funny part LEON ETC ETC fell right the fuck out.

like his knees buckled and shit and he hit the pavement and the toothless hillbilly homeless woman started screaming FUCKING COPS blah blah blah and it was like nine in the morning and everyone was everywhere and the sun was shining and the homeless woman said YOU'RE A WITNESS over and over to the guy leaning on his crossover and smoking

and he shrugged and smiled and said i didn't see shit and the big male cop laughed and LEON WTF was still sleeping like a little baby on the ground and more cops started showing up and melinda maria dejesus bonaventura cruz was still inside the title bureau and after a few minutes a higher-ranking cop came over and asked what happened and the dude said i don't know sir i wasn't watching and satisfied the cop walked away and

the guy by the crossover started going what happened what happened like how the cop said it and he looked into his car and saw his sleeping children and thought about the girl in the title bureau and her ex and

what happened what happened some more and then the head honcho cop came back and asked the guy to sign a statement and the guy looked at the paper and when he saw the date at the top something clicked in his mind and he was like oh fuck you know what [in his head]

ten years ago today i wrecked while leading a bike race that woulda put me in the X Games but

he didn't say that to the cop becuz the cop wouldn't care and

he signed the statement. he wrote i didn't see anything.

what happened is what he really wanted to write
what happened to my youth
what happened to her ex
my ex
blue suede shoes and elvis
the homeless lady's teeth
wtf leon's anger
all of it.

This beautiful stuff sounds so damn good when you read it aloud. And I did just that. I was sweating by the end. You make writing what it should be...exciting, raw and dangerous.

Really love how you keep spinning this. There were a couple places where I scrolled down thinking,'ok gonna end it here,' but you kept rolling...and I was glad you did.
